From the Committee

On what felt like the hottest day of the year, it was terrific to see so many members at the club ride in memory to Trace Allen earlier in June. We hope it was a fitting tribute to Trace and what he has done for the club and its members over many years. The picture below was taken at the start.

You will have probably seen the communication on Facebook about the work that James has done on refreshing the club logo and redesigning the club kit. We should be able to formally launch this during July, so watch out in your inbox for the announcements.

June results are shown below but a couple that are particularly noteworthy: Terry Bonnet won his age group at the UK Aquathlon Championships and Heather Hobbs has qualified for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships later this year – congratulations to them and to everyone else who took part in races this past month.

It’s a great time of year to open water swim, cycle and run in the warm weather but don’t forget to stay safe out there and look out for each other.

CLUB NEWS

Herts Championships: A reminder that the Standard Distance Herts Club championships takes place on 20 Aug. this is also referred to as the Herts Summer Tri. Only Hoddesden put out a full team for the sprint championships in May and as a result retained their trophy. It would be great if we could get a full quota of age groups to put a challenge to them at this race.

New Members:  A warm welcome to new members Andrew Lunn, Luke Sieger, Phillip Moss, John Broom and Nicola Brigden who joined the club in the last month.

Duathlons; : The next and final club duathlon of the season will take place on 2ndSeptember.

Recipe of the Month: Carrot Cake Baked Oatmeal bars
This is a really easy recipe to make and in my opinion is much better than some shop bought oatmeal bars.
Ingredients

  • 225g whole rolled porridge oats
  • 75g carrot, finely grated
  • 125g blueberries
  • 25g golden caster sugar
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground mixed spice
  • 4 tbsp maple syrup
  • 75g pecan nuts, roughly chopped (or sesame seeds or whatever you have to hand)
  • 100g coconut oil, melted

Method
Preheat oven to 190°C/gas mark 5. Line a large baking sheet with greaseproof paper. Place the oats, carrot, blueberries, sugar, cinnamon, mixed spice, maple syrup and pecan nuts in a bowl and pour in the melted coconut oil and the mashed bananas. Combine until evenly mixed, then shape into 12 roughly 11x3cm rectangular bars.

Bake for 35-45 minutes, until golden and slightly crispy. Leave to cool for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to firm up.
